Now The Who bassist has gone where his belongings can't travel — he died of a heart attack in 2002 — and his beloved Buzzard bass and Boris necklace remain behind. They're more than just mere belongings, though. They're artifacts from the golden age of rock 'n' roll. Lovely axes to grind at Montreal Guitar Show
Written by vintage on June 30, 2009 – 4:41 am -ShareBy Bernard Perusse, The Gazette June 29, 2009 Rediscovering his inner Hendrix inspired Jazz Festival marketing vice-president Jacques-Andre Dupont to launch musical instrument shows and a blues camp. If Jacques-André Dupont hadn’t had one of those benign midlife crises, it’s entirely possible that a depressed 15-year-old kid wouldn’t be healed by playing the blues this summer. If Dupont hadn’t rediscovered his inner Hendrix, guitar fanatics from all over the world might not have a place in Montreal to gather every year and talk guitar geek. Most important, if a meeting with Montreal International Jazz Fest sponsors hadn’t been cancelled at the last minute, he might never have walked into Steve’s Music Store in Toronto. That... more

A year after his death, Bo Diddley in new spotlight
Written by vintage on May 30, 2009 – 2:48 am -ShareFri May 29, 2009 5:13pm EDT By Gary Graff DETROIT (Billboard) - Bo is gone. But his beat goes on. It's been a year since Bo Diddley died of heart failure at age 79 in his home in Archer, Fla., after a prolonged illness. His June 2, 2008, passing ended one of the most influential careers in pop music history, a 54-year run during which the man born Ellas Otha Bates earned the rightful title of the Originator as he helped merge blues into rock 'n' roll. On such hits as "Bo Diddley," "Hey Bo Diddley," "Say Man" and "Who Do You Love," Diddley created a staccato, second-line-style beat that became an intrinsic part of rock's foundation. Diddley's array of inventions included his trademark, square-shaped Gretsch guitar (three models... more

The Fender Jazzmaster
Written by vintage on May 26, 2009 – 6:26 am -ShareThe first Jazzmaster prototypes existed in pre-production form as early as 1957. There were a small number of guitars that carry one of the features. Many had one-piece maple necks that feature a hybrid headstock shape, a combination of the first Stratocaster and Jazzmaster shapes. Other early individual features are black pickup covers, black aluminum pickguards, Telecaster type knobs, and maple necks with rosewood fretboards. By mid 1959, Fender had dropped the aluminum pickguard in favor for a celluloid one in a fake tortoiseshell pattern. Custom color guitars often had white pickguards. Later an plate of aluminum was added to the back of the pickguard for electrical shielding. The "offset-waist" contoured body was designed... more

Determining the Value of a Collectible Guitar
Written by vintage on May 3, 2009 – 3:55 am -Shareby George Gruhn As both a dealer and appraiser of vintage fretted instruments I am faced with the daily necessity of placing dollar values on instruments. Any appraisal or price determination is to a certain degree the subjective judgment of the particular dealer or appraiser involved, however, the figures that I or any other dealer or appraiser place on instruments are firmly based on our knowledge and experience of the market involving supply, demand, and prior precedent for instruments of this type. While there is no one simple formula that a dealer or appraiser uses for evaluations, the following factors are critically important: 1. Maker Instruments made by famous luthiers or manufacturers are far more sought after than those... more

Gibson B.B. King
Written by vintage on April 22, 2009 – 5:51 pm -ShareGibson BB King Custom B.B. King has marveled many guitar players throughout the years with his short hard bending blues licks and scorching blues chops that can be imitated but not duplicated. Gibson owes a great deal of their success on their ES models to the blues man. Since the late 50s and 60s B.B. King has played numerous Gibson ES guitars (ES-5, ES-335 etc) His use of the Gibson ES has given them a great deal of exposure. As a result Gibson and King decided to produce an official line of Gibson electric guitars bearing the B.B. King name. In 1980 Gibson Introduced the Gibson B.B. King custom. It had the Lucille logo on the peghead, 2 pickups, gold plated parts, varitone switch and was available in ebony or cherry finishes. Gibson... more
