Starting your vintage guitar collection

Written by vintage on July 26, 2009 – 9:03 am -

ShareLou Carlozo It may sound like rock-opera fiction, but it happens: Weekend Warrior hits garage sale and buys dusty old Fender guitar for $50 (or, cleans attic and finds the Gibson he bought in high school for $100). He visits a guitar shop in "Antiques Road Show" fashion -- and discovers the "beat-up axe" is a vintage collectible, worth $10,000. Or $20,000. Or $100,000. The vintage guitar market has declined like other investments in this recession. But if you have cash to seed a small collection, why not start a fun hobby that's financially savvy? After all, when your 401K takes a beating, you're broke. When your vintage guitar takes a beating, it may continue to appreciate anyway, just because it looks so cool. Besides, who... more

Lovely axes to grind at Montreal Guitar Show

Written by vintage on June 30, 2009 – 4:41 am -

ShareBy Bernard Perusse, The Gazette June 29, 2009 Rediscovering his inner Hendrix inspired Jazz Festival marketing vice-president Jacques-Andre Dupont to launch musical instrument shows and a blues camp. If Jacques-André Dupont hadn’t had one of those benign midlife crises, it’s entirely possible that a depressed 15-year-old kid wouldn’t be healed by playing the blues this summer. If Dupont hadn’t rediscovered his inner Hendrix, guitar fanatics from all over the world might not have a place in Montreal to gather every year and talk guitar geek. Most important, if a meeting with Montreal International Jazz Fest sponsors hadn’t been cancelled at the last minute, he might never have walked into Steve’s Music Store in Toronto. That... more

A Brief History of Taylor Guitars

Written by vintage on March 15, 2009 – 2:07 am -

ShareTaylor Guitars got its official start in 1974 with its founders, Bob Taylor and Kurt Listug. However, the story begins much earlier than that in the 60s when popular music spurred by the Beatles got a lot of people itching to play the guitar. The founders were young then, but they started their love of the guitar at around this time. Eventually, this itch led them to the purchase of a guitar shop with another friend, Steve Schemmer. The shop was modest, and information on the Taylor Guitars site reveals that it was less than ideal. They constantly dealt with water leaks and flooding. But, everyone needs to start somewhere! Their beginnings were rocky and difficult and that first workshop seems to signify that. Together, the three... more

A Brief History of Epiphone Acoustic Guitars

Written by vintage on March 15, 2009 – 1:55 am -

ShareEpiphone had its true beginnings in Greece where Anastasios Stathopoulos started out by making traditional stringed instruments such as violins, lutes, mandolins, and a Greek instrument called the lioutos. The family then moved to Smyrna in Asia Minor but later fled to New York due to persecution. After moving to New York, Anastasios son, Epi Stathopoulos, inherited the family instrument making business. During the early years of Epi s running of the business, the company was called the House of Stathopoulos. But, Epi changed it from that to Epiphone. He filed for the change in advance, but it did not become official until 1928. The new company was named for Epi, the owner, and phonos, the Greek word for sound. At this point,... more

The State of the Vintage Guitar Market

Written by vintage on February 19, 2009 – 12:13 am -

ShareThe video points out that vintage guitars from dealers are selling at a premium today. This is primarily due to a marketing correction. Dealers who paid the market price for a guitar 3 or 4 years ago are now having a difficult time getting their money out of the guitiar. However, good deals can still be found from individual sellers. And vintage guitars are still a good long-term investment.
