A year after his death, Bo Diddley in new spotlight
Written by vintage on May 30, 2009 – 2:48 am -Fri May 29, 2009 5:13pm EDT By Gary Graff DETROIT (Billboard) - Bo is gone. But his beat goes on. It's been a year since Bo Diddley died of heart failure at age 79 in his home in Archer, Fla., after a prolonged illness. His June 2, 2008, passing ended one of the most influential careers in pop music history, a 54-year run during which the man born Ellas Otha Bates earned the rightful title of the Originator as he helped merge blues into rock 'n' roll. On such hits as "Bo Diddley," "Hey Bo Diddley," "Say Man" and "Who Do You Love," Diddley created a staccato, second-line-style beat that became an intrinsic part of rock's foundation. Diddley's array of inventions included his trademark, square-shaped Gretsch guitar (three models of which are now... more

Written by vintage on May 30, 2009 – 2:44 am -Marin Independent Journal - Staff Report Posted: 05/29/2009 01:01:00 AM PDT Nearly 37 years ago, a 25-year-old Sausalito guitarist named Ronnie Montrose was in the midst of a musical coming-out party, wielding his guitar on tour with the Edgar Winter Group and tearing through soon-to-be hits like "Frankenstein" and "Free Ride." On Oct. 10, 1972, the guitar was stolen when the Edgar Winter Group performed at Nichols College in Dudley, Mass. Montrose's guitar has been valued at as much as $500,000, according to Tiburon vintage guitar collector Michael Indelicato. But now, after... more

The Fender Jazzmaster
Written by vintage on May 26, 2009 – 6:26 am -The first Jazzmaster prototypes existed in pre-production form as early as 1957. There were a small number of guitars that carry one of the features. Many had one-piece maple necks that feature a hybrid headstock shape, a combination of the first Stratocaster and Jazzmaster shapes. Other early individual features are black pickup covers, black aluminum pickguards, Telecaster type knobs, and maple necks with rosewood fretboards. By mid 1959, Fender had dropped the aluminum pickguard in favor for a celluloid one in a fake tortoiseshell pattern. Custom color guitars often had white pickguards. Later an plate of aluminum was added to the back of the pickguard for electrical shielding. The "offset-waist" contoured body was designed to be comfortable... more

Determining the Value of a Collectible Guitar
Written by vintage on May 3, 2009 – 3:55 am -by George Gruhn As both a dealer and appraiser of vintage fretted instruments I am faced with the daily necessity of placing dollar values on instruments. Any appraisal or price determination is to a certain degree the subjective judgment of the particular dealer or appraiser involved, however, the figures that I or any other dealer or appraiser place on instruments are firmly based on our knowledge and experience of the market involving supply, demand, and prior precedent for instruments of this type. While there is no one simple formula that a dealer or appraiser uses for evaluations, the following factors are critically important: 1.
